KWHS, the global investment competition offered by Wharton, is a major opportunity for financial knowledge, literacy and experience. Here we'll be posting articles and sharing tips for groups that want to participate
Each year, the Wharton Global Youth Program offers the opportunity for high school students across the world to study about investments and financial markets through the Knowledge at Wharton High School (KWHS) Investment Competition.
Starting in early September, groups from 5 - 7 high school students receive a Case Study, in which crucial information about the client is presented. After carefuly analysing the Case Study, students will be given USD 100.000,00 virtual cash to create a unique investment thesis and strategy for a stock only portfolio.
KWHS offers a limited STOCK LIST, in which all securities available for investing will be posted. The list varies from year to year, but generally contains listed companies from all the major markets, including Brazil.
It is crucial to mention that all teams have the opportunity to chose an Advisor, being a parent that is familiar with the area, or even a school teacher. With the Advisor on board, teams have an even more valuable experience, since the knowledge offered by a professional is of paramount value.
With that said, after the start of the competition in September, teams must start developing a strategy, having a sketch finished by the second week of November, when a Mid-Term Project Review is due. After that, teams continue on their path to invest and strategise, having the Final Project to be delivered by the second week of December.
After delivering the Final Project, teams must wait until the end of January to receive a feedback from their work, when the top 10 teams from each region are selected for the regional finals. That part of the competition is a 10 minute presentation, which is held at the BTG Pactual amphitheater.
PS: 1 - The KWHS is not a performance driven competition, meaning that you will not be judged by the portfolio performance, but the quality of the strategy.
2 - Wharton offers its Trading platform (OTIS) for trades, performance metrics and rankings.
3 - Region 1: Eastern and Central Asia
Region 2: Southern, Southeastern and Western Asia
Region 3: North America, Europe, Africa and Oceania
Region 4: Latin America and Caribbean
Although the KWHS competition may not be popular at school, students, for the last few years, have been participating and reaching the regional and global finals regularly. On the KWHS 2019-20, two Santacruzense groups reached the regional finals (A$AP Capital and Maple Tree Capital), and the latter proudly represented school at the global finale!
The competition is a time consuming and demanding semester long project, but by no doubts an exceptional experience. Here we'll be sharing valuable tips on group formation, article reading and previous tournaments case studies and team projects
